Three WIPs and some new yarn to ogle! [May. 25th, 2005|05:02 pm]
[mood | content]
[music |Metroid Prime - [01] Metroid Prime Title]

Just a few little things to show off today, but I haven't stopped my yarn love affair just yet. I put things behind cuts today because the pictures are bigger and could break friends pages. I'm trying to be more considerate.

Cozy, Convertible Mittens and Tri-Aran-Angle shawl, oh my! )

Yay! [May. 3rd, 2005|03:57 pm]
[mood | yarn porn!]
[music |enya - aldebaran (dedicated to ridley scott) (S K Y . F M - New Age)]

My KnitPicks order arrived today!

So pretty! So soft! From left to right: Sock Landscape in Cape Cod (navy/teal/tan/dark brown blend), Sock Landscape in Yukon (navy/denim/ice blue/dark grey), Sock Garden in Hydrangea (purple/lavender/pink/magenta). All three are 100% merino wool and soft as down. Mmm, I just want to cuddle it.

Hydrangea is earmarked for giftness for [info]ladylysander, the Sock Landscape... I'll figure something out. :)

A couple FOs and a WIP [May. 2nd, 2005|01:45 pm]
[mood | exanimate]
[music |armik - swept away (S K Y . F M - New Age)]

I've finally gotten around to finishing a couple things I'd had on the back burner for a while. For example:

The Carpal Tunnel Syndrome afghan is done! I frogged out the one border that was too short, and picked up the stitches again. Now it's done and I'm quite pleased. It's pretty big - that's Carl holding it up and he's about 5'8", and his arms are mostly spread.

These are the socks I finished for Carl. Scheepjes in navy blue on US2s. I really do like knitting socks.

Working now on the Tri-Aran-Angle from Knitty in Bernat Big Value (onoes acrylic) in a dark blue. I love the cable work on this so very much.

I also ordered the yarn for Mom's modified Rosedale. She wants it in solid black (no stripes), has to be thrown into the washer, and soft. I ordered Cascade 220 Superwash - 7 skeins in black and 1 skein in a dark blue. I love the nifty ribbing that Rosedale has, working two colours into the cuff, so I want to do that to at least throw in SOME colour. I might also knit the intarsia panel on it with the dark blue and use some stitch pattern in there for accent. Think that sounds neat? And if so, what stitch should I use?

Decisions, decisions.

Penguins! [Apr. 25th, 2005|06:53 pm]
[mood | pleased]
[music |Cyndi Lauper - Time After Time [1983] (S K Y . F M - Best of the 80s)]

Although Knitty lists Pasha as 'piquant', I really didn't find him quite as hard as the rating would imply. I've never done short row shaping before, and wrapping and turning was new too, but I wouldn't be stopped! Now I know how to do all those nifty things, and while it's not perfect, I'll just keep plugging away.

Knit in Phentex Merit in black, orange and white (OH NO ACRYLIC YARN STONE THE HEATHEN just kidding!), Pasha used less than half of the three 50g balls I bought. I still have a huge bag of stuffing left over as well, so I guess that means I just have to make more penguins until I have a little penguin army.

Knitting toys is downright addictive. I like doing this as much as I like knitting on Cozy.

Another project done! [Apr. 20th, 2005|09:49 pm]
[mood | content]
[music |enya - only time (S K Y . F M - New Age)]

Yes yes, I know everyone is sick to death of iPod cozies, but here's one that's actually finished - and I'll put what instructions I used down with it. It lacks windows or anything, but I wanted to protect it from scratches. :)

Ooh aah!

It's Orpheus, my iPod mini. He is blue and small and pretty and full of fun music oh yes.

Basically, all I did was I took some leftover Patons Kroy jacquard sock yarn and a pair of 3 mm DPNs. I cast on sixty stitches and split them between three needles, 14, 14 and 32 stitches. I did knit 2, purl 2 ribbing until it was long enough, then I bound off 39 stitches and did stockinette for the flap, with a two-stitch garter stitch border to prevent curling. When the flap was long enough for my liking, I did four rows of knit, then bound off. I sewed up the end of the 'tube', and later on I'll get some velcro to secure the flap down and hold Orpheus inside. :)

If you're trying to learn DPNs, this is even *easier* than a sock. Don't be afraid! You can knit this for phones, too, or whatever else might need scratch protection.

Knitting Away [Apr. 10th, 2005|02:22 am]
[mood | sleepy]
[music |robert micheals - picante (S K Y . F M - New Age)]

Woot. Not a whole lot to report, but I figured I'd throw a few notes up:

First, I'm knitting socks for Carl. I'll get pictures later.

Second, I knit a cat!

See the kitty! )

The pattern is [info]geobabe's, and you can get it here.

Progress Report! [Mar. 11th, 2005|11:21 am]
[mood | satisfied]
[music |aerenda - sacris solemniis (S K Y . F M - New Age)]

I know! It's been a while, hasn't it? But I haven't been lax, oh no. Here are a few finished objects, and a few works-in-progress. Because there are a lot of pictures, I'll cut them to spare your friends page.

Afghan Progress )

Booga Bag )

Knitty's Cozy )

Another Irish Hiking Scarf )

I've been busy. The other thing I had in mind was designing a cardigan knit in an aran colour, but using the DNA Scarf pattern and knitting DNA helixes all through it - like a DNA cable along each sleeve, then two on each side of the cardigan's zipper, then four along the back. I'd then either double-stitch or embroider in colour: black phosphate backbone, and four colours for the bases.

I am such a nerd. But I love it!

First Pair Of Socks Done! [Feb. 5th, 2005|05:08 pm]
[mood | pleased]
[music |midori - enticing the dream (S K Y . F M - New Age)]

I'm feeling very proud of myself. I finally finished a pair of socks! My first time ever using tiny DPNs, wool thinner than worsted, picking up stitches, and passing slipped stitches over. They aren't perfect, and I think I'm figuring out where I went wrong, but there are no large ladders visible in the socks (just tiny ones where I know I didn't pay attention) and the mistakes I made don't ruin the socks, so...

Socks are horribly addictive. )

These were knit on US2 DPNs. It's Patons Kroy (75% wool which is apparently superwash according to my roommate/25% nylon) in Denim Jacquard. For everyone who wants to try knitting socks, go for it! I had to fight with the first sock to learn how to cast on DPNs and not have a huge jog between my stitches where they connect, but once that was down it was easy peasy! Also, anyone who says their fingers are too big are wrong - I have fat, blunt fingers and I managed to knit these up just fine. All you need is patience and striped yarn (because it's fun to watch the patterns come to life as you go.

Next on my list is Knitty's Cozy using the Andean Silk I got from KnitPicks. I've done one repeat so far - pictures will come when I've produced more - and it looks very nice and feels very soft. There's less stitch definition, I think, than if I'd gone for the 100% silk the pattern calls for - but it still looks really fine and will be nice for my Oma when she's sitting outside on a cool spring morning. I also have an Irish Hiking Scarf on the go for my fiance's father for his birthday, and another pair of socks to knit for... well, myself or someone like me. I've also been collared into knitting the Hooray For Me gloves for a friend in Alaska... and there's always my afghan...

Yikes, I need to get knitting more! :D

Sock it to me! [Jan. 29th, 2005|02:47 pm]
[mood | pleased]
[music |david lanz & paul speer - desert rain (S K Y . F M - New Age)]

My first ever sock! Done in Patons Kroy (Denim Jacquard) on US2 DPNs. My first time using DPNs ever, and doing things such as picking up stitches. I'm really happy with how it came out - a minimum of laddering (stretched stitches).

Casting on was a total bitch, though. I'm not looking forward to that part again.

Finished projects! [Jan. 22nd, 2005|02:52 pm]
[mood | cheerful]
[music |Utada Hikaru - Simple And Clean]

This is an Irish Hiking Scarf knit for my beleaguered fiance. My first attempt at cables, and I'm pretty pleased with how it turned out.

Oh look, cables! I love the look of this scarf. I wish I had more people to make this scarf for. This was done in Patons Decor in Barn Red.

The ChicKnits cabled headband. I'm not too happy with how narrow it is at all. It barely covers my fiance's ears, and it's not like he's Dumbo, here. Done on US8 straights with Patons Shetland Chunky in Black. It knit up super-quick, which is good. Only eighteen stitches to cast on.

Cable close up. It looks good, but lemme tell you how very much I hate back-cabling. The scarf was a lot faster and easier to do when it came to cabling than this thing.

Still waiting on the ordered yarn from KnitPicks.com - Andean Silk, it's called. It's a mix of merino, alpaca and silk and was only $3.79 a skein, compared to the $9+ I'd otherwise be looking at. So far, people seem to be pretty happy with the KnitPicks yarn, so I may have a new place to order from, which is exciting. Means I can knit nicer things with good quality yarn for people I care about. :D

Next up: doing something with the steel blue Chunky I've got. Going to make a purse for myself, I think.

First post! [Jan. 12th, 2005|03:44 pm]
[mood | busy]
[music |Styx - Mr. Roboto]

Okay, here we go. Welcome to the inaugural post. Here's what I've got on the hop right now:

Afghan in progress. This is after about, oh, a week or so of solid knitting on it. It's about 41 inches (104 centimetres) across. When it's done, it'll probably be about five feet long. Right now it's at 16.5 inches (42 centimetres) in length. I have three more repeats of the colour pattern to go, then I have to edge the sides. Fun.

This is my first attempt at cables. It's the Irish Hiking Scarf from helloknitty.com - this will be for Carl's dad. I plan on putting an inch-long fringe on the ends just to fill it out a bit. It's a bit narrow for my tastes, but I love the look of it.

I also have lots and lots of yarn.

My full stash.

Here's my cotton yarn stash. This is the leftover from *12* dishcloths for Christmas! I think I may just take some of the more similar coloured ends and knit them together to get one dishcloth.

My next project after I finish some scarves and things is to try my hand at socks. This is self-patterning sock yarn, a wool/nylon blend. Not sure how this is going to turn out, but I'll try anything once. Well, twice, to get a pair of socks.

This is a mix of leftover yarn and new yarn. The bright red in the top left corner is for Carl's Irish Hiking Scarf to match his jacket. The steel blue in the bottom left is for me. Not sure what I'll do with it yet. The white yarn is for knitting kitty toys. The rest is leftovers from knitting up M's scarf and Carl's slippers.

To date, I have knit:
- 1 teacozy
- 1 garter-stitch scarf for [info]moriyosi
- 12 cotton dishcloths/potholders/whatever
- 1 pair slippers for [info]tempest56
- 1 square for catnip wonton for MacGuyver
